I have always loved a good romance! As I teenager, my sister introduced me to Jane Austen, and I thought Pride and Prejudice was probably the most wonderful book ever written. I’ve read a lot of romances over the years because I can’t resist uplifting love stories and happy endings.
In spite of my love of Shakespeare and Jane Austen, I got a bachelor’s degree in mathematics—which came in handy when one of my six children needed help with math homework. I graduated from college with a baby in my arms. Five more children followed.
My husband and I are empty nesters now, and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise—it’s awesome! The house stays so clean! I have three sons-in-law and six grandchildren, whom I spoil rotten. As a grandma, it’s almost my divine responsibility to hand out cookies before dinner.
I didn’t do much writing for several years while I raised a family, but I wrote when I could, dabbling in reporting for the local newpaper and writing funny columns in the PTA newsletter. When my youngest son got to junior high school, I started writing seriously and signed a contract with Summerside Press for my first Amish books: Kate’s Song, Rebecca’s Rose, Miriam’s Quilt. I have always been drawn to the strong faith and the enduring family ties of the Plain people.
Later, I signed with Kensington Books for my Matchmakers of Huckleberry Hill series. It was a match made in heaven! I love writing about the antics of my two elderly matchmakers, Anna and Felty Helmuth. Anna and Felty are well into their eighties when they decide that their grandchildren need help finding spouses. Anna knits pot holders and cooks strange dishes like banana jalapeno bread and asparagus raisin casserole. Felty likes to play the license plate game and makes up lyrics to songs when he can’t remember the words. This unlikely pair of matchmakers will leave you laughing and renew your faith in the power of love.
My other series “The Honeybee Sisters,” features sweet romance, an eccentric aunt, and a cat named Farrah Fawcett. I love the humor almost as much as I love the romance.
