Good morning! I’m Lael Harrelson. Let me take a moment to introduce myself. I’m a former Mennonite, wife, mom, business woman, author and new blogger at Amish Fiction Authors. My perspective on the plain people is a little unique. My family was atheist until I was ten. My mom became Christian, married a very conservative man and joined the Mennonites. Talk about a one-eighty for a happy go lucky outspoken youngster! I spent my youth in the Mennonite church and several years as a Mennonite missionary in Africa and Haiti. In my late twenties and after much heart wrenching introspection and trepidation, I left the plain culture and started attending a non-denominational church, where I met my husband, had two bio kids, and adopted three kids from Haiti. That’s it in a nut shell!
I just published my first novel, Tremors of Doubt, which is the fictional story of a young woman raised by her aunt and uncle who are Mennonite missionaries in Haiti. She wants to step outside her traditional roles in the church and be more active alleviating the poverty and hopelessness around her. What happens? You’ll have to read it 😊, but you can see I drew a lot of inspiration from real life struggles and experiences.
A few years ago, I felt God calling me to let the unique experiences of my youth be a window into a world that is held up by Christians as beacons of family values, hard work, integrity, and a simple homespun life, (and that’s all true!) but sometimes the pricklier issues are glossed over. Nobody is perfect and that includes the plain people. I try to sift through my heritage and highlight the parts I cherish, while still sifting out the chaff and acknowledging it. I hope to share drool worthy recipes, sewing and craft ideas, parenting and marriage wisdom from the plain people, tidbits on Amish/Mennonite culture, mission work, biblical womanhood and a hodgepodge of random thoughts.
If you want to learn more about me and my book you can check out my page at LaelHarrelson.com. Hope you will pull up a chair and hang out with me a bit each month! I can’t wait to get to know you!
