Just Like the First Time By Laura Bradford

Just Like the First Time By Laura Bradford

Back in 2005, my first-ever book (a mystery) was published. I remember everything about every “first” with that book…

The first cover sighting (it was atrocious)…

Seeing my name on a real book…

Holding the completed book for the first time…

My first fan letter…

My first award nomination…

At the time, I couldn’t imagine anything (short of my kids, of course) dulling that excitement. But the reality is, time did.

Since the publication of that first book, I’ve seen 29 more books published (almost all of them mysteries). And while I always smiled at their first shelf-sighting, the pinch-me excitement I’d experienced with the first book was never quite there, always dulled by the next book I needed to write, or the busyness of everyday life.

The day after each new release, I always got a little irked with myself for not celebrating it the way I should have, yet, irked or not, I let it happen again with the next one, and the next one, and the next one.

Until today that is.

I’m happy to say, that this week’s release of Portrait of a Sister (my first-ever women’s fiction novel) has me every bit as giddy as that first book back in 2005.

Some of that is because it’s a new genre—a chance to stretch my writing wings, so to speak.

And some of it is because this book, this story, was a real passion project for me. I wanted to tell Katie and Hannah’s story, and I knew I could do it.

Either way, I’ve soaked up all the special moments leading up to today’s release in much the way I did with my first book, thirteen years ago.

The first cover sighting (much, much better)…

My name on a new genre book…

The first real feedback I got on the advanced reader copies…

The email from my editor with the news that Portrait of a Sister had landed three national book club picks…

All of those moments have gotten me here, to today—release day for my thirty-first overall book but my first-ever women’s fiction novel, Portrait of a Sister.

Trust me when I tell you my smile is huge…
