Grandma Ricks’ Nut Brown Bread by Jennifer Beckstrand

Amish Cooking is down-home cooking. My friend Debbie Hiller gave me this old family recipe for a quick bread that is hearty and sweet and oh-so delicious.

Sliced Nut Brown Bread

Ingredients:

2/3 cup molasses
2 tsp. baking soda
2 2/3 cup buttermilk
½ cup sugar
¼ tsp. salt
1½ cups chopped walnuts or pecans (I use pecans)
2 cups raisins (softened in hot water and drained)
2½ cups whole wheat flour
2½ cups white flour

Directions:

Mix together molasses and baking soda and let sit. Mix all the rest of the ingredients in a large bowl. Add the molasses and baking soda mixture and stir in. Divide the dough into three full-size bread loaf pans sprayed with nonstick cooking spray. Bake at 350 degrees for 40-45 minutes.
