An Amish Country Album

An Amish Country Album By Laura Bradford

I don’t know about you, but for me, when I’m in need of a little slow-down, I find myself craving time in Amish country. Sometimes, I’m at a point in the writing process where I can toss stuff in an overnight bag and head to Lancaster for a day or two. But sometimes, I simply can’t.

That’s when I open the photo file I’ve been slowly adding to over the years and “visit” via pictures and the memories attached to each and every one. I thought, perhaps, you’d enjoy a look at some of my favorites…

I met this calf in an Amish barn in Lancaster County. She was very curious about my camera, and, if I hadn’t been fast enough, I’d have had calf-drool on my screen seconds after snapping this…

During my most recent trip to Lancaster, I was enjoying a little quiet time looking through the fence at this when I noticed two grave markers (side by side) that were written entirely in German. They were the only two, in the entire cemetery, like this and, of course, the writer part of my brain wanted to know why…

Then, there’s this one that exudes everything I love about spending time in Amish country. I took it while sitting outside with a dear friend/longtime reader. Every time we’d hear the clip-clop of an approaching buggy, we’d stop talking and just watch as it passed, both of us just quietly marveling at the peace and quiet beauty of this place and its people…

How about you? Is there a place you like to visit that blankets you in the same kind of peace?

  1. We fine beauty, serenity and nature when we go to Allegany State Park here in NY. We go camping there several times every summer, and so do our 5 grown sons, and their families. Every summer we have a family camp-out for a week in August. This year will be 22 of us. % generations in our family love it. I urge anyone to go and enjoy the lakes, cabins, camping areas, water falls, wildlife, hiking trails,Thunder Rocks, streams, etc. Swimming beaches, canoes and kayaks, and paddle boats are avsilable, or bring your own. Also snack bars, gift shops, museums, and a very fine park restaurant.

  2. Getting away physically is not always an option. Reading is my favorite form of slowing down and enjoying the sights and sounds through the written word.

  3. Every summer we go to my oldest sisters home on the lake and celebrate the summer birthdays. It is
    a cherished time.
